The building work started in 1843. The towers were built of blocks of grey granite. Utsira Lighthouse was lit on the 15th of August 1844. Today only one lighthouse is operated. The light houses are Norway's only remaining twin light houses in operation. The light house is Norway's highest located light house at 68 metres above sea level. The lense system was made in Paris in 1890 and is still in use. The light house has been automated, but is still manned with three watchmen. Utsira Lighthouse has provided weather observations for the Institute of Meterology since 1867 and is Norway's oldest meteriological station in constant operation. In 2005 Utsira Ligthouse is one of 5 lighouses been a part of EU-Pharos, and this prosject will end in 2007. This prosject in Norway will also work on what to use the lighthouse in future.
